– Deleting a Header or Footer (Microsoft Word)

I’ve found a number of people questioning this but haven’t found and actual answer yet so I’ll try posting it here. The PDF includes other scanned documents, so we can’t use the Word footer for this.

For most users, this wipes out the Word header and footer in the PDF. And it doesn’t matter what method is used to get from Word to PDF, the end result is the same. Any ideas what that might be? Which, at the moment, makes it look like we’d have to ensure everyone everywhere electronically creates PDFs only by printing to PDF, since the documents can come from all over.

That’s going to be a tall order This basic problem seems to have been around for years, based on searching message boards. I’m a little surprised neither Microsoft nor Adobe have come up with a fix. Not sure where the core of the issue lies, but someone must be able to find a solution!

Here, headers and footers are retained when converting a Word document to PDF via File Save As, as long as headers and footers are not formatted with the Hidden attribute of course. If you do that, there is no reason why they shouldn’t display in a PDF as well. This is also an Adobe function rather than Word. It would seem that Word’s Save As pdf preserves the character of the headers and footers in the file created while the print method does not but simply makes it a part of the page.

Normally, I would prefer the Word method because it preserves information. I hate working with converted documents in Word so have little experience with reopening pdfs created in by Word in Word as editable documents.

It occurs to me that the Word save method may give a better result on the return to Word. In answer to your question about opening and editing pdf documents in Word, the answer is that, since Word , Word has had the ability to open and edit pdfs.

How well this works depends on how the pdfs were created. Some have to go through OCR first. I am thinking that documents created using Word’s SaveAs pdf may be converted back a bit closer to the original. It’s just not part of how we handle documents. It doesn’t seem to be very clean, anyway. I did just convert a PDF from each of the three methods back to Word. Which is interesting. Probably due to the tables, text, etc that happen to be in this particular document.

Sounds like a pretty iffy scenario unless the document is just straight text. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. I have the same question Report abuse. In reply to Stefan Blom’s post on January 24, Stefan, The original PDF is generated fine, all headers and footers intact. In reply to JimStone1’s post on January 24, How are you editing the PDF? In Word or by using some other program? I wouldn’t have even thought to edit a PDF in Word. Is that possible?

Charles Kenyon Volunteer Moderator. Word supports basic editing of PDFs. Specifically, you can only edit converted text documents. Word can’t handle scanned PDFs, which are treated as a sequence of uneditable images. A workaround for you might be for you to use the print as pdf facility on your computer to resave all pdfs that come to you before incorporating them into a pdf compilation. I do not anticipate MS altering their SaveAs method to remove structural information from the pdf.
